The students of OLL recently participated in READ Pinellas, a dress-down day that raises money and awareness for adult literacy programing. According to READ Pinellas, over 80,000 individuals in Pinellas County are functionaly illiterate. Knowing that illiteracy can lead to crime, unemployment, substance abuse, and teen pregnancy, our students paid $1 each to help fund this program that provides tutoring groups and educational opportunities to adults who struggle with reading. READ Pinellas provides tutoring to any adult over the age of 16, including immigrants and refugees. They also provide GED scholarships to students and grants to various literacy organizations. Lights, Camera, Action!
On Friday, our third grade class was bursting with movie stars who smiled and waved as they glided down the red carpet. Ms. Flannagan’s class put a new spin on summer reading when they created their own awards show for their favorite characters. Each student selected one character from their novel to receive an award of their choice. They then created detailed masks of those characters using construction paper and paper plates. Students each wrote an acceptance speech that their character would deliver during the ceremony.
