Week 18-- Week of 1/11/10 2010-01-15 http://www.myoll.com/catholic-school-pinellas-classroom.php?ClassId=9

Dear Parents,

We had a nice first week back to school and, although it was difficult to get up in the morning, it is good to be back in the swing of things!

Mrs. Bogataj mentioned in her note this week that we've had a higher number of tardies than usual to start out the year.  Please be aware that middle school students are to be unpacked, seated in homeroom, and ready to begin their day when the bell rings at 7:50.  They like to visit in the morning and may need more time than you think to get organized.  Please plan on arriving at school by 7:40 AM, so your child has enough time to get organized for his or her day!  Thanks!

It's also time to re-evaluate supplies.  This week (Monday for the B group, and Wednesday for the A group), I'm going to give students time to clean out lockers and organizers and ask them to make a list of supplies they need.  I expect that blue, erasable pens might be at the top of many lists!

7th and 8th grade have taken their social studies mid-terms.  Once all students have completed make-ups, I'll send these home for your signature.  In 8th grade SS, we'll begin to study WWII.  In 7th grade SS, we'll begin westward expansion, and in 6th grade, we’ll complete out study of continents and countries.

In 6th grade literature, we’ll finish our poetry unit and continue in the vocabulary workbook with Unit 7.  There will be a vocab test on Friday, and the workbook work must be completed by then.  The next reading counts test is due Friday, 1/29.  After poetry, we’ll begin reading the class novel Sixth Grade Secrets.

Have a wonderful week!

Blessings,

~~Mrs. Hong

Week 17-- Week of 1/4/10 2010-01-09 http://www.myoll.com/catholic-school-pinellas-classroom.php?ClassId=9

Happy New Year!

I hope you all had a wonderful, restful break!  I enjoyed spending time with my family , and having the alarm clock turned off!

7th and 8th grade midterms will begin this week … both grades will have their social studies midterms on Thursday.  We’ll spend Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday reviewing what we’ve covered so far this year.  In 6th grade, we’ll continue the work we began before Christmas break in geography.  My goal is that students will understand the different geographic and political divisions in the world around them (continent, country, state or province, county, city, etc.) and be able to identify many of the countries of the world.  We’ll continue with this study for this week and next.

In 6th grade literature, we’ll finish our poetry unit and continue in the vocabulary workbook.  The next reading counts test is due Friday, 1/29.  After poetry, we’ll begin reading the class novel Sixth Grade Secrets.

Have a wonderful week!

November 20, 2009

As I write this, we have just begun our Thanksgiving break ... I'm sure it will fly by!  I hope for you and your family, it proves to be a week of rest and enjoyment.  Father Gary reminded us this week at Mass that grateful people are happy people ... I am especially grateful for my students and their parents, and I am happy to be welcoming family for Thanksgiving at my house!

Thank you for your generous donations during our food drive!  I'd like to remind you to please send in your spare change for the casita we are sponsoring through Pinellas Hope.  Our class project for December is the church giving tree.  We have chosen a tag for an 11-12 year old girl.  I'm asking each family, if you are able, to please send in a $1 or $2 cash donation (more if you can or wish to).  With guidance from the students, I'll purchase a gift that we can place under the tree.

Here's a look forward to after the break ...
In 8th grade social studies, we will begin to study WWI.

Seventh graders will continue the hard work setting up the new government – chapter 5 covers the Articles of Confederation, the two Constitutional Conventions, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights.

In 6th grade social studies, we’ll continue to concentrate on geography – longitude and latitude, map reading skills, and different types of maps.

In 6th grade literature, we'll begin Unit 6 in vocab, work in the literature book, and I'll provide some D.E.A.R. (Drop Everything and Read) time.  The next Reading Counts test is due on December 11th (this is for November/December).

Sixth grade religion will focus on Advent and Stewardship over the next two weeks.  We will have Guidance with Dr. Puterbaugh on Wednesday.   We will be leading the first all-school Advent service of the Season on Monday morning, and three of our sixth graders will be altar servers at Mass on Thursday for the fourth grade liturgy.

Computer students (6th grade) should have finished their alphabet project for Mrs. Robinson by now. We will concentrate on other skills in Microsoft Word during computer classes.   Middle school technology students (humanities rotation) are off and running in Windows Movie Maker.  As a reminder, students may bring in photos or music on a CD or flash drive.  All music MUST be teacher-approved before importing it into Movie Maker.

Blessings,

~~Mrs. Hong
