1. Math-pract. book p.95 #'s 1-11

• This week the students will have a combined spelling and vocabulary list. There are 15 words on the list and they come directly from the book we are reading, A Cricket in Times Square. These words are more challenging than the students are used to, so please make sure they study this week!!!
• The spelling and vocabulary packet has been modified. Students need to complete 25 points from spelling and 25 points from vocabulary. They will turn it in by Friday instead of Thursday.
• Our class is leading the school Mass this week. We have the honor of serving in different ways at this very special liturgy- The Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes!! Several students in the 4^th grade have been asked to read, carry the gifts, or receive the travelling chalice. I hope many of you can be there to celebrate with us!!
• Next week our school Mass will be on Wednesday, February 17^th, instead of Thursday to celebrate Ash Wednesday. The Mass will be at 1:30 if you are interested in attending with the school community.
• Please send in your lottery ticket for the Saints & Sinners Ball, if you haven’t already.
• Please make sure to have your child decorate a box for Valentine’s Day. If he or she does not have the materials, or you just don’t have time this week, please have your child come in with a large zip lock bag marked with his or her name. Thanks!!
• On Tuesday, February 23^rd students will be going to CCCHS for the annual 4^th grade Math day. Each year the CCC Math Honor Society students invite 4^th graders from around the diocese to come to the school to celebrate math. The students are engaged in fun math activities and relays throughout the day under the guidance of the high school students. There is no cost for this field trip. Please complete the permission slip and return it by 2/15. Thanks!!

• We started a new book in reading this week entitled The Cricket in Times Square. I am going to focus on vocabulary in context. The students will be keeping a list of important words and definitions. Because of this, I will not be working with the orange vocabulary book for a few weeks.
• REPORT CARDS will go home today. Please make sure to sign one copy and return that copy in the envelope. Thank you!
• I am in need of an ink cartridge for our classroom copier. It takes an HP901 black ink cartridge. Please let me know if you are able to get this for us. Thanks!

• HAPPY NEW YEAR!!
• This is just a reminder that the 2^nd payment for St. Augustine will be on February 26^th. Lori Mattox will send home more information in the next few weeks.
• Catholic Schools week begins on Sunday, January 31^st. Students and families are encouraged to attend the 9:30 Mass. There are many events that will take place throughout the first week of February. More information will be sent via e-mail in the next couple of weeks.
• On Friday, I will be doing an activity in religion that involves students sharing a trophy or award that has been earned. If your child has something to bring in, please have them do so on Friday (no sooner, please.) It is not a requirement,
• No spelling this week.
• Book reports went home. I explained the directions but STRONGLY encouraged students to get help with this report. All words and ideas should be that of the student, but parents may assist in helping them make it look like a newspaper article. You may assist in layout, ideas for headings, and proofreading. Please review the report with them, and make sure they have followed all directions.
• Book It reading logs will be on-line this afternoon.

3. S.S.- Chapter 1, (FL text) test on Thursday

• There will not be any spelling or vocabulary this week.
• We will have a noon dismissal on Friday. There will not be ANY after-care on that day.
• On Thursday, the students that participated in the Advent Angel program will reveal themselves with a special snack that they choose. IF YOU KNOW YOUR CHILD WILL NOT BE HERE ON THURSDAY, PLEASE LET ME KNOW by TOMORROW. We will arrange something for Wednesday. Thanks!
• The book logs are due by Thursday. Your child is required to read 240 minutes this month, instead of a book report. Thanks! I would like a parent to initial each of the days read.
• The Christmas performance begins at 7p.m. on Thursday evening in the Conmy Center. A reception will follow.
• We are still collecting items for Kimberly Home. Thank you to all that have already donated!

• Yesterday I was out sick, so I am catching up on e-mails and grades. 
• Our migrant worker gift collection was a success! On Friday evening, our class “shoppers” bought many wonderful items for the children. The feedback has been so positive. I know the students really connected with this project. It will be great to see it come to a conclusion on Thursday, as the students wrap and deliver the presents!
• There are some changes to the test schedule this week. Please see below.
• Please keep in mind we are still collecting baby items for Kimberly Home. Thank you for all of the donations that have already arrived.
• The Advent Angel program is going really well. I am going to switch the reveal day to the Thursday, December 17^th. Hopefully, this will be less hectic than the last day before break.

• Happy Advent everyone! It is a busy time of year filled with excitement, extra activities, and hopefully some joy and preparation for this holy season!
• We began today with a school-wide Advent prayer service. We will continue Advent activities throughout the next few weeks in our classroom as well. 
• One of the traditions of the 4^th grade is to shop for 2 migrant worker children in this advent season. The students will select 2 tags from the tree this week, and over the weekend several students and their parents will shop for this child. In order for this to be a success, students need to bring in $2 by Friday, December 4^th. Students were told today they can bring in more or less depending on their situation financially. Students can also consider making a card if they cannot give financially. I want all students to be a part of this wonderful program!
• Students may also choose to participate in the Advent Angel program. Students will be given a student “angel” to pray for secretly over the next few weeks. They will write the angel notes complimenting them or writing a prayer. At the end of the 3 weeks, they will reveal themselves with a special snack for their Advent Angel. I need this returned by tomorrow-if possible!!! Wednesday if the student is out sick.
• There is no formal book report this month, but students are asked to keep a reading log that will be due before the break begins. This was handed out today!
• A St. Augustine update went home in your child’s backpack. Please make sure you look for it….it has an important form to complete and some additional information.
• This month your child needs to keep a book log instead of a book report. This also went home today. Thanks!

• Wow! It is amazing that we are only 1 week from Thanksgiving break! Where has the time gone?
• We are still collecting items for our Thanksgiving food drive.  Our collection is a little on the low side. I hope our 4^th graders will be able to really help a lot with donations this week.  THE 4^TH GRADE HAS BEEN ASKED TO BRING IN THE FOLLOWING ITEMS: spaghetti sauce, rice, ravioli, noodles, and canned spaghetti. ANY DONATION will be accepted, though!  Thanks in advance for giving your child the opportunity to help those in need!  Donations are due by Thursday.
• We have spelling this week, but no vocabulary test.
• Please make sure your child continues to read over Thanksgiving break. The book reports are due Tuesday, December 1^st.
• I will not be checking my e-mail over the Thanksgiving break. If you have any concerns, I will contact you when we return on the 30^th. Thanks!
• I am asking the students to keep track of the number of fruits and veggies they eat for the week (in their whole form-juice doesn’t count.)  They have a form and may need some assistance with serving amounts.  THANKS!

• I’m extending the book orders to tomorrow, if anyone is still interested in purchasing for this month.
• The Student Council sponsored food drive has begun! 4^th grade is responsible for noodles, rice, spaghetti sauce, canned spaghetti and ravioli. Of course, any donation or item is appreciated! Items are due by November 18^th.
• Our leftover Halloween candy drive has been VERY successful. Thanks for all the yummy donations for our migrant workers.
• Class Lists (addresses, e-mail, phone #’s) are coming home today with your child. Any mistakes found, please e-mail the front office (Toni or Martha) so that they can make the corrections in the computer. Thanks!

• A BIG WELCOME TO Lauren Sokolowski-our newest member of 4^th grade!
• I apologize about the report cards. I forgot to send home the 2^nd copy for you to keep. Please make sure to send 1 copy signed, and the other copy you may keep for your records. I will send home the 2^nd copy today.
• The November book reports will be explained in class tomorrow. It is more of a traditional book report this month. There will be a form for the students to complete with no project. Students should be reading a fiction book of their choice within their lexile range(usually no more than 50 below their lexile, and no more than 100 above their lexile.) Reports are due by December 1^st.
• Students will be taking a cumulative vocabulary test this week (Units 1-4,) so there will not be any spelling.
• The new Book It November calendar will go home today. If your child forgot to send the October calendar in today, please have them bring it tomorrow.
• The 4^th and 5^th graders are leading the candy drive for the migrant workers. Each year, the students collect leftover Halloween candy (no chocolate) from all the grades. We will then stuff Christmas stockings with the candy to be given out at Christmas time to the migrant workers and their families. It is a great, no cost community service project!
• This morning, my mom visited the 4^th graders. She is visiting from NY and shared her experience as a volunteer at a mission in Nicaragua this past summer. The students were able to see a wonderful picture slideshow, as she explained the mission’s purpose, culture, etc. Make sure to ask your child what he or she learned today. It really was fascinating!

• I hope everyone enjoyed their weekend! 
• Our Halloween festivities will be on Friday afternoon. Mrs. Guilfoile has arranged for the food and volunteers. Thanks to everyone who is helping to make this a special time for the students!
• Last week I began a new component to our reading program. Students will be receiving Scholastic News on a weekly basis. It is a grade appropriate current events magazine. Students get the magazine on Monday, and spend time in the mornings and during independent reading to read the articles and answer 10 quiz questions on the back. Students keep this magazine in their 13 pocket folders. Usually,   I select one article to review and discuss each week. Please do not throw this away as they need to turn it in by Friday each week. I only have 1 copy per student, so a missing magazine receives a zero for that week. Thanks!
• Friday will be TWIN DAY. Students may dress up to match another student. The cost is $1 and the money raised will go toward Pinellas Hope.
• Believe it or not, several students are down to their last blue erasable pen, red pen, and highlighter. Please ask your child if they are in need of some replacement items.

• It was great seeing so many of you this weekend! I enjoyed seeing the students and spending time with my own family at the Fall Festival. 
• We are almost at the end of the 1^st quarter. I am requesting parent conferences if I feel we need to communicate about academics or behavior. If you would like to conference with me, and I do not send a request home, please contact me. Mrs. Bogataj has attached the form in Friday’s weekly updates.
• The Friday shirt order form is being sent home today. Remember students can wear these special shirts every Friday!! 
• If you have not checked Powerschool in a while, please continue to check this week as grades are closing on TUESDAY, OCTOBER 27^th at noon!! I will not be able to change anything after that time. 
• The science projects were a big hit! We are looking to “house” them for a while in the cafeteria. 
• We are back to our regular routine-spelling and vocabulary this week!!

• ITBS began today.  We begin 2nd period each day (8:45) and testing lasts about 90 minutes.  Students are given breaks in between each section. If your child is not feeling well (cough, fever, etc.) please keep them home until they are 24 hours fever free.  We will have make-up testing next week. THANKS!
• BOOK IT begins this month. Students in 4th grade that read 400 minutes per month, will receive a PIZZA HUT coupon for a free personal pan pizza.  I am sending home a calendar book log, so students can record the minutes read.  Parents are asked to intial each day that the student reads.
• There will be no spelling or vocabulary this week.  I will not be giving spelling either next week due to the short week. 
• The students are off from school on Friday, October 16th. The teachers have a professional day.

• I hope everyone enjoyed their weekend!
• This is a busy week with tests. I have reviewed with the students strategies for studying. We also complete reviews in class 1-2 days before the test (as well as daily review) and we often review right before the test again. 
• Don’t forget to send in items for our Fall Festival basket. Our theme is scrapbooking.  
• I am in need of empty 2 liter soda bottles. I need 6 by Thursday. Please send in any if you have any.
• Wednesday I will send home progress reports. You do not need to send them back. It will be yours to keep.
• The St. Augustine information will go home today. You need to let me know by 10/30 if your child will be attending. Lori Mattox will be coordinating the details of the trip. Please send her the information. Thanks! 
• I put equipment mesh bags on my wish list.  We have been blessed with an abudance of recess euipment, but it is overflowing out of plastic bags right now.  If anyone can send in the mesh bags, please let me know.

• REMINDER: Tonight is Open House. It begins in the Conmy Center at 7:00p.m. I will be giving an overview presentation regarding 4^th grade at 7:30 and then again at 8p.m..Due to our limited time tonight, I will have a sign-up sheet for conferences, if you have specific concerns about your child’s academic performance or behavior. Thank you!
• Mrs. Guilfoile will have parent sign-up sheets tonight for volunteer opportunities during the school year.
• Due to the overwhelming response to the spelling packet (which I am thrilled about), I will need to limit the number of bonus points to 10 for each packet. For the 1^st packet, I allowed up to 20 extra points.

• I am pleased to announce that Theresa Guilfoile will be our room mother this year. She and I will work together to communicate with you over the year regarding field trips, class parties, and other special events. THANK YOU!!!
• I am looking to complete a bulletin board. I need a wallet size photo of each child. Please send one in by Friday. Thanks!!
• PowerSchool is now updated. If you do not have access or a password, please contact Mrs. Agres at magres@myoll.com
• The math TEXTBOOK is now on-line!! I have attached a link on my website. The directions are there as well regarding password and user name. Please try this as soon as possible to make sure that the usernames are working correctly. It is full of EXTRA resources in case a lesson is confusing or your child needs extra practice. It also eliminates the need for a student to bring home the textbook.
• School pictures will be on Thursday, September 3^rd. Students wear his or her Liturgy Uniform. If you are interested in purchasing pictures, send the money no later than Thursday. These pictures are used in the yearbook and for student ids. All students are photographed, even if you do not make a purchase.
• Arrow Book Club order forms went home last week. If you would like to order, they are due by Friday, September 4^th. You can send it in with a check or place the order directly on-line.
• Students should aim to read at least 15 minutes a day. I will be assigning book reports each month (except for December, May, and June.) Students are required to read 1 book report book and at least one other book per month. They must take at least one READING COUNTS quiz per month. If they do not take the quiz by the given due date, they will receive a zero for that month. I will be adding a link to my website, where you can check to see if a book has a READING COUNTS quiz.
• For our new families: we have our annual Fall Festival coming up. Students are permitted to wear the Fall Festival t-shirts on Fridays up through the weekend of Fall Festival. The cost is $9 and order forms were attached to Mrs. Bogataj’s last newsletter. This is a wonderful support of our school’s largest fundraiser!!
• Class dues are $15 and are due by September 23^rd.
• I gave students their 1^st spelling packet this week. Directions are on the sheet and I have also posted the form on my website. ONLY words 1-20 are tested. #’s 24-25 are challenge words.

• I am collecting class dues. I ask for $15 because I subscribe the students to Scholastic News and this covers the cost of the student subscription. The remaining money will go toward class parties. I would like the dues by Wednesday, September 23^rd. Please send in with your child, marked 4^th grade class dues.

• We are in need of recess equipment: kick balls, jump ropes, hula hoops, football, and soccer balls. I will house them in my classroom and students will be responsible for collecting and respecting the equipment. If you can make a donation (it doesn’t need to be new, just in usable condition,) please send it in as soon as possible.

• We have been discussing the summer book, How to Eat Fried Worms. Next Friday, we will be celebrating this book by making “dirt cups with worms” and “chocolate covered worms.” I am need of 4 parents willing to donate the items needed. Please let me know if you can and which list of items you will bring. Thanks!

• We had a great 1^st day!   I was very impressed by the students and look forward to a great year.
• Please have all textbooks (hard cover) covered by fabric or paper bag no later than Wednesday, September 2^nd. I am not requiring that the workbooks (soft cover) be covered but the life of the books does extend if the soft covered have contact paper. (It costs about $5 for a roll of contact paper at Walmart.) PLEASE NO CONTACT PAPER ON TEXTBOOKS!!!
• I will post my weekly newsletter each Monday, with the exception of illness or a school holiday. I will send a link in an e-mail to you after I post it. Please make a habit of reading my newsletters, as it often contains important information.
• We will begin using our vocabulary books next week.
• Our Smartboard is working!! You will get to see it in action at Open House on Sept. 8^th. I will have sign-ups for various class events at that time as well.
