     In the computer lab we learned more about Beverly Cleary on her website, beverlycleary.com  We are enjoying multiplication in math!  We partnered up to play a multiplication game with dice.  We listened to songs by educational musician Jack Hartman.  On January 11, Jack Hartman will be coming to OLL to perform a concert for EC4 through third grade.  Each student is asked to bring $5.00 for the concert by Dec. 14.  It is sure to be fun and memorable!

 

The Week Ahead

     Our school Mass this week is at 9:00 on Tuesday, Dec. 8 for the feast of the Immaculate Conception.  Wear your liturgy uniform on Tuesday.  The Book Fair continues in the library this week through Wednesday, Dec. 9.  On Thursday, Dec. 10 we will go to the sacrament of Reconciliation.

     This Friday, Dec. 11 is another Dress-Out Day for $1.00 to support Pinellas Hope, a charity that supports the homeless in our area.  The theme is "sports", so students can wear their favorite team colors or shirts.  On Friday, Dec. 11 we will also celebrate Ramona Day in third grade.  Each student is asked to bring in one, hard-boiled egg (with the shell still on) that day.  Our Ramona book reports are also due on Friday.

     Remember to start bringing in your gift book for the "gift book party" we are having on Dec. 18.  Buy and wrap one, new, third grade level chapter book.  Girls label yours "for a girl."  Boys label yours "for a boy."  Bring your book in by Dec. 15.  Thank-you!

     The third graders had fun making turkey centerpieces from pinecones.  Thank-you Mrs. Morrison!  On Friday we had a special treat at snack.  Thank-you parents!  In religion class we have been talking about stewardship.  We found out that being a steward means taking care of and being thankful for the gifts God has given us.  We finished reading Ramona Quimby, Age 8. For our next book report the students will "sell" the book by designing ads or writing and performing commercials.  An information sheet about book reports went home Nov. 19.  The reports are due Friday, Dec. 11.

 

The Week Ahead

     The Book Fair in the library opens Wednesday, Dec. 2 and runs through Dec. 9.  The fourth grade will present the liturgy at Mass on Thursday.  Saturday, Dec. 5 is the Breakfast with Santa event in the Conmy Center.  Students should bring back their November Book It calendars this week through Friday, Dec. 4.  Remember to total your # of minutes and have it signed by a parent.  December calendars go home on November 30.

     On the last day of school before Christmas vacation, Dec. 18, we will have a "gift book party" in third grade.  Each student is asked to buy and wrap one, new, third grade level chapter book.  Girls should label theirs "for a girl", and boys should label theirs "for a boy."  On the day of the party, everyone will choose a gift bok to open and keep.  Bring your gift book in between now and Dec. 15.  Thank-you!

Last week we made saint ornaments for OLL's tree at the Festival of Trees event in Countryside Mall.  In the computer lab we practiced keyboarding skills on a fun, interactive website.  We enjoyed the More Health guest speaker's preasentation about healthy bones on Friday.  In language arts, we learned how to write a friendly letter.  We wrote pretend "get well" letters to Ramona.  This week we will write thank-you letters to our guest speaker.

 

The Week Ahead

This week we will finish reading Ramona Quimby, Age 8.  An information sheet about our next book report will go home on Thursday.  We are still collecting canned vegetables for the Thanksgiving Food Drive through Wednesday, Nov. 18.  Thanks for your support!  Student Council is presenting our school Mass at 9:00 on Thursday.

     The students enjoyed researching the lives of saints in the computer lab.  We have also started learning the Apostles' Creed.  In language arts, we learned how to write compound sentences.  Look for them in the books you read.

 

The Week Ahead

     This week our school Mass is on Wednesday, Nov. 11 instead of Thursday.  It will be a special Veterans Day Mass.  Wear your liturgy uniform on Wednesday.  The Student Council is organizing a Thanksgiving Food Drive.  The third grade is asked to bring in canned vegetables between now and Nov. 18.  This Friday, Nov. 13 we will have a guest speaker from the More Health organization come and talk to us about the importance of healthy bones.

     We had a fun time last Friday!  Thank-you parents for the help with our treat at snacktume.  Thank-you students for supporting Pinellas Hope with the Dress-out Day.  Report cards also went home Friday.  One copy is for you to keep.  Please sign the other copy and have your student return it to school in the brown envelope.  In social studies we are learning about Native Americans.  Ask your student what Mesa Verde means in Spanish.

 

The Week Ahead

     Students should bring their October Book It calendars back this week.  Remember to tally up your total minutes of reading for the month and have a parent sign it.  Bring it back to school by Friday, Nov. 6.  It does count as a reading homework assignment.  November calendars will go home Monday.  The fourth and fifth graders are organizing a candy drive.  Students can donate some of their Halloween candy (no chocolate), and the candy will go into Christmas stockings for migrant children.  You can bring in candy all this week. 

     This Wednesday, Nov. 4 is a half day with a noon dismissal.

We have completed the first quarter of the year!  The third graders have worked very hard this quarter.  In math class, we are working on addition and subtraction properties and regrouping into the hundreds and thousands.  Remember, to go on the math website www.thinkcentral.com the username is your student's first and last name.  Tha password is ollmath  In the computer lab, we took the Scholastic Reading Inventory assessment.  Information about your student's reading level (lexile) will go home in the report cards this Friday.

 

The Week Ahead

We are enjoying Ramona Quimby, Age 8.  This week Ramona tries to follow a fad at school.  This Friday, Oct. 30 is a dress-out day for grades 3-8.  The students are asked to bring $1.00 for Pinellas Hope, a charity that helps the homeless in our area.  The theme of the day is "twins/triplets."  Dress like one of your friends or a group of friends.  We will also have a special treat at snack for Halloween.  First quarter report cards will go home on Friday too.

Thank-you parents for another wonderful Fall Festival!  The third graders did a great job presenting th liturgy at Mass last Thursday.  The students also were very creative with their character box book reports.  In the computer lab we practiced how to log on to our math book's website and try some of the activities.  The students are excited to check on the progress of our bean plants every day.  They are growing, and we discovered plants really do bend toward the light.

 

The Week Ahead

We are almost at the end of the first quarter.  This week we will begin reading a chapter book, Ramona Quimby, Age 8 by Beverly Cleary.  It's a realistic fiction book with themes third graders can identify with---getting along at school, being part of a family and growing-up.  Our spelling and vocabulary words will be taken from the book.  Look at the document section to the right.  There are now study tips for each subject.

The third graders worked very hard on their ITBS tests!   In religion class, we have been learning about Mary and the Rosary.  Since October is the month of the Rosary, we are praying a decade in class each Friday this month.  If students have their own rosaries they may bring them on Fridays.

 

The Week Ahead

On Tuesday, Oct. 13, Mrs. Brochak will have her Craft Botique for the schoolchildren in the cafeteria during the morning.  Students can bring pocket money to buy craft items.  The third grade is presenting the liturgy this Thursday at the 9:00 Mass.  Picture Re-take Day is also on Thursday.  Our book reports are due on Thursday too.

Friday, Oct. 16 isa Teacher Professional Day, so there is no school for students.  Our Fall Festival opens Thursday night and runs through Sunday afternoon.  See you there!

     Last week we read a story about a community garden called City Green.  It tied in nicely with our study of plants in science.  The third graders planted lima bean seeds in class.  We will take turns watering them and watch for the roots, stems and leaves to develop.  We are now studying animals.  Ask your student----what can plants do that animals can't? 

     The students loved working in the remodeled computer lab.

     Thank-you for the candy donations to the Fall Festival Raffle basket!

 

The Week Ahead

     This is ITBS testing week.  We will be testing in the mornings.  We practiced the different kinds of tests last week.  Remember to get plenty of sleep, eat a good breakfast and have sharp #2 pencils.

     For our first quarter book report, the students are making character boxes.  An information sheet went home on Friday.  Book reports are due Oct.15.

     On Monday the students will bring home a Book It calendar for October.  The students are asked to log how many minutes they read at home for recreation.  At the end of the month, tally up the number of minutes, have it signed by a parent and bring it back to school.  It will count as a reading homework assignment.  If the student meets the goal of 200 minutes, he/she will receive a Pizza Hut pizza certificate.  Enjoy reading!

     Last week we read a sports-themed story called Max Malone.  The third graders are planning stories about a sports event in their own lives.  Thank-you for participating in the Dress Down Day for literacy on Friday.  Ask your student to answer this riddle---What's black, white and red all over?   In social studies we are learning about bodies of water, landforms and climate.  During computer class we visited our science book's website on the Smartboard.

 

The Week Ahead

     Tuesday is Fr. Gary's birthday.  He will be visiting all the classses at snacktime, and we will celebrate with a little treat.  Also this week we will be practicing for the ITBS tests which are coming up the week of Oct. 5-9.  On Friday there will be a Blessing of the Animals at 2:30 in the afternoon by the playground to honor the feast day of Saint Francis.  Parents should bring and hold the animals behind the back fence.  Also on Friday we will talk about our first quarter book report project.  I will send an information sheet home.

     For our Fall Festival Raffle Basket , the theme is "candy."  Each student is asked to bring in a donation of candy so the basket can be filled and raffled off at the festival.  Thank-you!

     We enjoyed reading about optical illusions in the story Opt!  In computer class, we interacted with illusions on the Smartboard.  In science class we conducted an experiment to see if water really does travel through stems.  Ask your student what happened when we put celery stalks in water dyed with food coloring.  A big welcome to our new student in third grade, Sophia Stentz!

     This wek we'll be reading a story about baseball called Max Maolone.  In math, we're rounding numbers to the nearest ten, hundred and thousand.  The new Student Council members will present the liturgy and be inducted at Mass on Thursday.  Progress reports for the first quarter will go home with each student on Friday..  Also, this Friday, Sept. 25 is a Dress-Down Day.  The students are asked to please bring $1.00 for the Pinellas County Literacy Organization and wear the colors black, white and red.  Look in the documents section on the right to find some tips on How to Study Science.

     After three weeks of school the third graders have settled in very well to their new class.  It was great to see the families at Open House!  The students really enjoyed taking apart lima bean seeds on Friday.  Ask them about the three parts of a seed!

     The first two weeks of school have flwon by!  We have been getting acquainted with our textbooks.  In math, we are learning about place value amd writing numbers in different ways.  In science, we learned how to tell a living thing from a non-living thing.  We read the stories of Abraham and Ruth in religion class.

     We had a very good first week!  The third graders did a great job learning new classroom rules and routines.  We talked about our summer reading books.  The students acted out scenes in class and looked up new vocabulary words in the dictionary.  On Thursday we enjoyed celebrating our first school Mass of the year.

The Week Ahead

     Welcome to Grade 3!  This week the students will be getting to know their new classroom and our routines.  A big welcome to Regan Morrison, Abigail Trumbull, and Jamie Harrell who are new to OLL!

     Our P.E. days this year are Mon.-Wed.-Thurs.  Bring your P.E. clothes starting on Wednesday.  On our P.E. days we will be dressing out at school right before P.E. class.

     Our school Masses are on Thursdays at 9:00.  Wear your liturgy uniform on Thursday. All parents are welcome to come to our school Masses.

     Below is this week's homework schedule.  The students will also be writing down their assignments every day in their homework planners.  (The students can use one of the notebooks they brought in on Orientation as thier homework planner.)

Monday--No homework

Tuesday--My Favorite Thing sheet

Wednesday--Math facts sheet

Thursday--Look up Religion glossary words---!. Baptism   2.  Bible    3. Christian   4. faith

Friday--No homework

    Your student will bring home any important papers in his/her red Homework folder every night.  I look forward to working with your students!
