In sixth grade, we will be exploring world history (later civilization toward present day). Lessons will take many forms: reading and answering questions, small and large group discussions, video presentations, role playing, map interpretation, cooperative group and individual learning, and more! We will incorporate the Ten Themes of Social Studies as defined by the National Council for Social Studies (NCSS):

  • Culture
  • Time, Continuity, and Change
  • People, Places, and Environment
  • Individual Development and Identity
  • Individuals, Groups, and Institutions
  • Power, Authority, and Governance
  • Production, Distribution, and Consumption
  • Science, Technology, and Society
  • Global Connections
  • Civic Ideals and Practices

In addition to our study of world history, we will delve into special units on the Olympics and the presidential election, as well as continue to work on our mapping and geography skills. As with all of our social studies curriculum at Our Lady of Lourdes, this course will be taught according to guidelines set forth by the National Council for Social Studies, the Florida Sunshine State Standards, and diocesan standards.
