The Catholic School Curriculum

Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic School is a faith-based educational community that provides a cohesive learning experience to children from Pre-Kindergarten to Grade 8.  Our school’s structure allows students to grow up in a safe, nurturing environment where they are educated with programs designed to meet their individual learning needs.  While standards and practices evolve as students grow from age 4 to age 14, they remain rooted in the faith expressed in our school’s mission and vision.

Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic School is accredited by the Florida Catholic Conference and the National Council for Private School Accreditation.  We are a member of the National Catholic Educational Association and a proud part of the Diocese of St. Petersburg.

Early Childhood

Students in our Early Childhood programs experience the joy of learning through exploration, discovery, and creativity.  Our curriculum emphasizes reading readiness, ensuring students have a strong foundation in phonics, phonemic awareness, and concepts of print.  For the past three years, every student in our VPK class earned a perfect score on the state Kindergarten Readiness Exam.  Our program forms children into learners who are able to think critically and problem solve while learning to grow as a part of our school community.  This year, we have expanded our program to educate more students, bringing on new teachers and opening new classroom facilities while preserving the academic excellence OLL is known for.

Primary Grades

Our primary classes integrate technology and traditional practices to empower students with the ability to read.  Students master complex phonemes, blends, diphthongs and digraphs, learning to recognize letter patterns within words that enable them to not only decode sounds, but words and word meanings as well.  Our primary teachers fuse phonics, sight words, and whole word reading – a dynamic approach that equips students with skills to work their way through higher level reading materials.  The primary math programs at Our Lady of Lourdes integrate technology on a daily basis, applying kinesthetic techniques to virtual learning, stimulating the imagination while reinforcing mathematical concepts.

Intermediate Grades

In the intermediate grades at Our Lady of Lourdes, students make the transition from “learning to read” to “reading to learn.”  While these classes still emphasize the fundamentals of literacy, our intermediate programs use the subject areas of science, social studies, and religion to enhance reading instruction.  Our intermediate enrichment program, used every quarter in third, fourth, and fifth grade, applies project-based instruction to create realtime, experiential learning adventures that  give students a deeper understanding of science, social studies, and religion content while expanding their reading skills, empowering critical thinking and reading for content.

Middle School

The Middle School program at Our Lady of Lourdes promotes independence, responsibility, and higher-level academic integrity while preserving the sense of community that is so essential to our Catholic school.  Our Middle School is departmentalized with each instructor being an expert in his or her subject area.  Students switch classrooms for every subject with performance-based grouping and academic blocks that ensure our faculty meets each student at his or her individual level.  Each student in our Middle School receives an iPad upon admission, a tool used for curriculum, instruction, assessment, and general organization.  While Middle School operates differently than the rest of the school, it maintains the high academic standards and moral principles that are foundational to Our Lady of Lourdes.
