Our Humanities Wheel is an enrichment opportunity for our Middle School students during their elective period. Each week, students spend an hour in one of four specialized courses designed to expand their passions, talents, and minds.
Theatre Arts
During Theatre, Mrs. Wong-Stark and Mrs. Stiff-Walker instruct students in singing Broadway, learning improv, character acting, designing costumes, and more! This elective engages students in creative learning, develops their self-confidence, and promotes collaboration and teamwork towards a high goal.
Broadcast Journalism
Mrs. Brown teaches our Broadcast Journalism class within the Humanities Wheel. Broadcast Journalism combines video and print media, giving students an understanding of these two major industries. Students work collaboratively on marketing efforts highlighting various components of our school, including the creation of blog posts, print materials and videos through the use of iPad technology.
Character Education
In the Character Education class, Mrs. Gross and her students take a look at what we call the six pillars of character; trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship. Students discuss at length the students’ thoughts and personal experiences as they relate to the pillars of character. As part of the curriculum we view a series of video blogs known as the Character Chronicles. This really brings character education alive for our middle school students. The class also spends a great deal of time looking at ways to resolve conflicts both in and outside of the classroom. The students work together to channel their energies into constructive ideas to keep OLL moving forward!
Yearbook
Mrs. Fonseca is our Yearbook Coordinator as well as the instructor of our Yearbook Humanities Class. Students in Yearbook work collaboratively to photograph school happenings, then use iPads and MacBooks to design and produce our school yearbook. Each quarter, a new group of students builds upon the work of the previous group, ensuring that every Middle School student plays a role in the production of our annual yearbook.
