A human’s image of God is truly a remarkable thing. In the scriptures, we hear numerous names for our God, from Yahweh to I am who am to the Way, the Truth, and the Life. Our God is both our Father and our Brother, our King and our Companion. While scholars and theologians have amassed thousands of titles for the Maker of the World, but perhaps the most fascinating titles come from the littlest ones – those to whom Christ tells us the Kingdom belongs – our children.
Fourth graders recently had a poetry slam while reviewing and sharing the art and power of developing theme, literary voice and powerful figurative language in a poetry genre study in Media class. Student shared individual poems based on the many powerful names of our God by beginning each line of their poem with I AM…
After ensuring proper credit was given to source of names of God that each poet chose, the students enjoyed sharing, reflecting and evaluating the “art of our language” of each author, evidenced with feedback on rubric of poetry elements.

I AM the Lamb of God who shepherds it’s sheep like a teacher cares about her children.
I AM a Shield that protects all of my people.
I AM the Refuge in the day of affliction.
I AM the Light that lets the people see.
I AM the Shepherd for you even when sheep go astray.
I AM the Truth that has no equal.
I AM the Wine of Salvation that invites people to drink
I AM the Rock that holds on strong.
I AM the Bread of Life that is made for you.
